10 TIPS FOR A GREENER CALIFORNIA ROAD TRIP

1.        Take short road trips: We’re not gonna lie...a road trip still emits harmful gases into the air, but a quick road trip is much better than flying.

2.        Ensure your car is well-tuned—or rent an electric vehicle for the day: Before you leave, check for under-inflated tires, dirty air filters, leaks, etc. A properly maintained car can improve your gas mileage and be gentler on the environment. Better yet: take this opportunity to test drive that electric vehicle you’re dreaming about. Most car rental companies now offer EV options.

3.        Plan your route: Mapping out your stops and points of interest not only cuts down on gas consumption, but it saves you time by eliminating unnecessary backtracking. We’ve taken care of all of these details for you, so you can check this off your list!

4.        Explore locally: By exploring your own backyard, you’ll produce up to 50% fewer greenhouse gas emissions and help to stimulate the local economy.

5.        Invite your friends along, and carpool:  Hitting the open road with a group of friends is always way more fun than going solo. And, our itineraries are great for groups of 2-5 people, the perfect car load!

6.        Pack light and smart: A heavy car is not efficient. Bring only what you need for the day, and don’t forget to pack your own refillable water bottles and snacks in reusable containers. It
saves you money, and is eco-friendly. Win, win!

7.        Put the trip on cruise control: You’re on vacation, so take your time and enjoy the ride. Fast, aggressive driving can increase your gas usage by up to 40%.

8.        Buy local: By supporting neighborhood businesses, you’re helping keep people employed, and supports a sustainable destination.. Don’t forget to pack your reusable tote bags!

9.        Eat like a local: You are on vacation, so take some time to enjoy your meal at a restaurant, instead of grab and go. Take-out produces a lot of waste—non-reusable bags, food containers, plastic cutlery, straws, and more. Even if these items are paper, they still contribute to waste and the whole idea is to reduce waste. Also, order dishes made with local, seasonal produce, and seafood that is sustainable: In California, this should not be difficult to find.

10.  Never leave a trace: Always be conscious and aware of the footprint you leave, how much waste you produce, and how much energy you use. And never leave anything behind but your footprints (and tire tracks on those dirt roads). Remember: reduce, reuse, recycle!

Happy travels!
